Yet all the evidence amounted to little in the way of serious indictable crimes. Friedmann had stolen nothing from the jail except keys. His possession of burglary tools was a misdemeanor. The prosecutors couldn’t confidently indict him for trespassing, because when they watched the videos of his infiltrations they learned that he’d never forced his way into the jail or used a false identity. In fact, he’d often presented his own I.D. to personnel. One day, the jail’s chief of security opened a cell door for him.
